National Trust Ashridge Estate is a large National Trust countryside estate straddling the Chiltern Hills on the border of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Covering around 2,000 hectares of beech and oak woodland, commons and chalk downland, it’s recognised for its varied landscapes and habitats that support diverse wildlife including ancient woodlands and chalk grassland species. Parts of the estate, known collectively as Ashridge Commons and Woods, are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to their biological value.
Visitors to the estate can explore an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways that weave through forests, open commons and rolling hillsides, with opportunities for walking, cycling and nature observation. Notable features include broad woodlands carpeted with bluebells in spring — such as in Dockey Wood (pictured) — panoramic views from high points like Ivinghoe Beacon and historic landmarks such as the Bridgewater Monument.
