The Chilterns National Landscape (formerly known as the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or AONB) is a protected countryside area that borders the southern edge of the Aylesbury Vale and extends across Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties. Designated in 1965, it covers over 300 square miles of rolling hills, woodlands, and farmland, recognised for its distinctive natural beauty and cultural heritage. It forms part of a wider chalk ridge landscape that runs through southern England and includes many villages, footpaths, and historic sites.
The area is managed to conserve and enhance its landscape, wildlife, and recreational value, while also supporting farming and local communities. It is widely used for outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, and nature observation, with numerous routes and viewpoints accessible from Aylesbury, with Wendover, Pitstone and Ivinghoe all at the foot of the hills. The Chilterns National Landscape functions as both a protected environment and a working countryside, balancing conservation with public access and rural livelihoods.
