Managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), it forms part of a wider network of conservation sites serving Aylesbury Vale and the surrounding area. The reservoir was originally constructed in 1797 to supply water to the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal and is now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its ecological importance.

As a nature reserve near Aylesbury, the site includes a mix of habitats such as open water, reedbeds, marshy fen, scrub and woodland, supporting a wide range of wildlife.
