Historical Figures

John Hampden

In the 1600s John Hampdens influence on the region and its people is undeniable. Hampden is most famous for his staunch opposition to King Charles I’s imposition of ship money, a controversial tax. His refusal to pay led to a landmark legal case that, though ultimately unsuccessful, galvanized opposition to the Crown. This act of defiance made him a symbol of resistance and a champion of English liberties. During the English Civil War, Hampden played a crucial role in the defence of Buckinghamshire against Royalist forces. His leadership and military prowess were instrumental in securing the county for Parliament. Though tragically killed in battle in 1643, Hampden’s legacy lives on. His statue stands proudly in Aylesbury Market Square, a constant reminder of his courage and sacrifice.
