For sisters Apple and Aryanna, opening their business in Aylesbury feels like a dream. They moved here from the Philippines in 2001, seeking a better life, and quickly found a sense of belonging in Aylesbury’s welcoming community. Apple’s husband, Nico, moved from London and instantly fell in love with Aylesbury’s peaceful vibe and friendly locals. Similarly, Aryanna’s partner, Fabe, after living in various places, chose Aylesbury as home. Setting up their tattoo studio here was an easy decision – they wanted to give back to the town that gave them so much. Their ethnic-minority family owned local business blends their London experiences with local charm, offering something new and creative to the community they cherish.

Fabe - Nostalgink Tattoo Artist

Q&A with lead Tattooist Fabe

Q – What are your earliest memories of the visual arts, and when did your interest first blossom?

A – My passion for art began to take shape seriously in the fourth grade while I was living in new York. It wasn’t until I received my first tattoo that something clicked. Watching the tattoo needle create a permanent mark sparked a realisation of my true calling.

Q As a hobbyist artist, I find the whole process of bringing somebody’s design idea to life in ink on their skin fascinating. What are some of the unique challenges you face in your job?

A “…understanding clients behaviour and knowing how to give them that peace of mind and calming their nervousness.

A fair amount of people have distrust towards tattooists because of bad experiences. It can come from an artist giving poor customer service, being rude, and unwilling to compromise on what the client may want. There’s a lot of factors in play.

Another challenge I face is getting designs together for clients. Some are very specific with what they want. I have to find a middle ground where I can still allow myself that artistic freedom whilst keeping the design inline with what the client wants. Because I can see the end result of the tattoo, it’s easy for me to understand why a design may work but for some clients it takes convincing, they need to visualise it/see what it’ll look like…

This industry is always going to be evolving and Tattooing is forever learning curve. So am steadily adapting and becoming better. Above all, believe that is and will always be unique challenge face.”

Q – How has the tattooing process evolved and improved in recent years, or even decades?

A – Tattooing has elevated over the years with new techniques developed for shading and different styles emerging, such as dot work, Trash polka, black work and fine line. All these different styles over time have pushed the industry to evolve, including advancements in equipment. I was a firm believer in coil machines (magnetics) and to this day, a lot of artists still use coil machines. But since the birth of rotary machines, it shifted the artists belief in which one is better to use.

The fundamentals of tattooing i.e. creating solid, clean crisp lines or what are the do’s and don’t for hygiene and more, I believe will never change. What has changed and evolved is how designs are made. I watched it go from pencil to paper drawing to using procreate and various art software to aid in the design.

Q – How do clients typically describe the sensation of getting a tattoo?

A – Every individual is different when it comes to experiencing the tattooing sensation. To put it down to one thing would be very hard. Clients pain levels vary. Some can sit for longer periods of time than others. I have clients that fall asleep at their sessions and I have others that can’t bare more than an hour. It all depends. Placement also plays a part on the intensity level. Areas like the Ribs, Chest, Sternum, inner forearm (upper & lower) tend to be more painful.

Q – How long have you been tattooing? And what famous names have you worked with?

A – I’ve been tattooing professionally for 7 years but including my apprenticeship years, it’s a total of 10 years. Being in the industry throughout those years, I’ve been privileged to tattoo some known people in the music industry and athletics. Some of which I won’t name due to confidentiality reasons.

The ones that I can name are:
Pop Smoke
Aaron Wan Bissaka
J-Fado
David Adeleye
NSG
Wilfred Zaha

Q – What is your most memorable tattooing experience?

A – The most memorable tattoo experience I’ve had, would be when I did my first tattoo after completing my apprenticeship. I was working in New Jersey at the time for a studio called Kiss of Ink. I remember having my first client and the nervousness set in. Learning how to overcome that nervousness was my biggest challenge since becoming a tattoo artist.
